Many young people dream of becoming a veterinarian but really have no idea what a veterinarian does. In order to help young people explore the world of veterinary medicine, we take part in Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute’s High School Co-Op Programme.
When a student is with us, we immerse them in the day to day environment of a veterinary hospital. They are exposed to both the role that a veterinarian has and the roles of the extremely important support staff of Veterinary Assistants and Veterinary Technicians in clinical practice.
For example, the student will learn about examinations, client education, diagnostic work up, x-rays, anesthesia and surgery. The technicians will teach them how to monitor animals under anesthesia, how to hold for blood work, and run the blood/urine/fecal samples. They will watch surgeries and dental procedures.
They will spend time with the veterinarian discussing cases and understanding how many factors play a role in the health of a pet. One of the most difficult things that anyone in the veterinary world must understand and be able to deal with is the effect that money has on the welfare of a pet. The lack of funds causes owners great heartbreak and can significantly hamper the veterinarian’s job.
Some students decide that they want to pursue a career in veterinary medicine as a veterinarian, veterinary technician or a veterinary assistant and others take a different career path and
We are also very proud to also partner with St Lawrence College as a work placement for Veterinary Assistant students and Veterinary Technician students. We strive to ensure that students get to experience all the aspects of a veterinary hospital so that when they graduate they will be ready for the workplace.
As clients, you will see students from time to time, either exploring the idea of a career in veterinary medicine, or as a current student in the college. They usually nervous, so give them a smile and a word of encouragement as they start on their next path in life. We are proud to be part of that!
Some students find a permanent placement with us- both Farah and TJ ( Teegan) came to us through the College programme. Courtney Barber started with us as a high school co-op, became a summer student and then a full time unregistered technician. Courtney has now returned to college but does come back and work with us from time to time.
We are happy that some many of our previous Co-Op students drop by to see us and share their new adventures with us, whether it be in the veterinary field or in some completely difference one. We know their experience with us helped them make decisions regarding their future.
